South African National Parks (SANParks) has closed off various sections of Table Mountain National Park, as well as the whole of Tankwa Karoo National Park. This is due to the current flooding and heavy snowfall in the Western Cape.
In a statement issued on the 11th of July, SANParks clarified that sections of Table Mountain National Park which have been temporarily closed are the Cape Point overnight hiking trail, the road to the Overseers Cottage, as well as the roads to Olifantsbos Cottage and the Smitswinkel and Slangkop tented camps.
All access roads leading to Tankwa Karoo National Park have also been closed until further notice due to snowfall.
SANParks cited a number of factors which have contributed to the closure of sections inside Table Mountain National Park. These include excessive mud slides, overflowing rivers and damages to access roads due to heavy rain.
‘The safety of our visitors remains our highest concern and we urge everyone not to attempt accessing these points until further notice,’ read the statement.
Earlier this week, Table Mountain National Park management advised park users that all trails in the Newlands Forest had also been temporarily closed due to unsafe trail conditions.
New developments and updates on the Newlands Forest closure are yet to be confirmed.
Adverse weather conditions are still expected to continue in the Western Cape, particularly Cape Town. Thus, visitors are urged to exercise extreme caution on access roads to Cape Point and Boulders. Hikers are also advised not to attempt any hiking trails.
Appreciating public co-operation on the matter, SANParks has promised to provide continuous updates as the situation develops.
