SANParks closes down Slangkop Tented Camp

Slangkop Tented Camp within Table Mountain National Park in Kommetjie has reportedly been closed after a ‘safety incident’. The rustic overnight camp was popular with hikers wanting to spend a night within the park.

Speaking to CapeTalk, Cape Town tour guide Frank Dwyer says SANParks cancelled a booking he made for a group of clients for early February. This is allegedly due to a safety-related incident, but the reason for closing was not confirmed. ‘I got an email cancelling [my booking] saying there had been incidents of crime and that it was closed for security reasons,’ he said.

Dwyer also added that he feels SANParks and other local authorities failed to prioritise safety measures along the Table Mountain route and those security interventions are needed for hiking tourism to thrive in Cape Town.

People staying at Slangkop Tented Camp has been victims of robbers in the past, and another popular SANParks campsite in the area, Orange Kloof Tented Camp, was closed in 2019 due to safety reasons.

Getaway tried to reach SANParks but has not received feedback at time of publication.
