Sarah Ferguson swims from Durban to Cape Town for ocean conservation

Posted on 22 February 2022 By Anita Froneman

Extreme athlete Sarah Ferguson is going to great lengths to shine the spotlight on the effects of plastic pollution. Sarah, who holds a Guinness World Record for being the first person to swim around the whole of Chile’s Easter Island in 2019, is a passionate ocean conservationist. She is also a physiotherapist, a motivational speaker and a writer.

Now, this powerhouse is swimming 1,500km from Durban to Cape Town to raise awareness and educate the public about the importance of preserving our oceans and rivers. ‘I’m passionate about the ocean, about the development of youth through education and I love to inspire lives through living my story,’ Sarah says on her website. ‘I believe that I have a talent and a gift to enable me to create sustainable change through my love of swimming.’

She kicked off her swim on Monday, 21 February. ‘We did 12.7km today in 4hours. I had a good current assisting me for the first 7km and then hit a counter-current so it slowed me down a bit,’ Sarah said on Facebook. ‘We made it to Treasure Beach in the Bluff. Visibility was good but did not see anything else other than chip packets. Thank you for all the love and support our team has received throughout the day!’

Below is a video Sarah recorded on Tuesday morning, 22 February.
