A game ranger in training from Scotland has been injured following an encounter with a black rhino in Northern Zululand on Wednesday, May 19.
IPSS Medical Rescue said the student had been on foot in a private reserve when he encountered the rhino.
‘The incident… prompted a search and rescue operation by IPSS Search and Rescue as well as anti-poaching units in the area. The student was located and preparations for evacuation were initiated,’ said IPSS on Facebook.
The student was stabilised and transported to a hospital in critical condition by KZN Private EMS.
Black rhino are known to be territorial. They can also move very fast and according to Save the Rhino, have been recorded at highs of 55 km/h.
These animals remain under threat due to poaching for traditional medicine. It is listed as critically endangered and has a population of around 5,600 in the world today according to World Wildlife Fund.
