Months after the first COVID-19 case was reported, the world is still grappling to overcome the deadly virus. While some countries like Italy and Spain are easing their lockdown regulations, Beijing is experiencing a potential second wave of the virus.
China’s capital recorded 31 new cases yesterday [16 June], bringing the total number of infections to 137 over the past six days, according to The Guardian. Travel restrictions have also been reinstated.
Authorities raised the city’s emergency response from Level 3 to Level 2. All movement in and out of the city is being strictly controlled and 1,255 inbound and outbound flights were cancelled.
Schools and universities are also closed again as of today [17 June]. ‘The epidemic situation in the capital is extremely severe,’ city spokesman Xu Hejian said.
The new confirmed cases were tracked back to the Xinfadi wholesale food market in Beijing’s Fengtai District. The virus was detected on chopping boards used for preparing imported salmon in the market, according to VOA.
