The Seychelles have been free of COVID-19 for over two months but have now reported nine new cases. These were not locally transmitted cases but rather from a fishing fleet that entered Seychelles.
Crew members of a Spanish fishing fleet entered the Seychelles on Tuesday [June 23] and three of the members initially tested positive.
After a crew change for the 26 Spanish vessels currently fishing tuna in Seychelles’ waters, six more positive cases were reported, according to Seychelles News Agency.
The Seychelles’ president, Danny Faure said that it remains necessary to keep on doing business for the sake of the economy.
‘We cannot stop businesses. The country is at a time where we cannot make this mistake. What we need to do is manage. When Seychelles had 11 cases, the world had 1 million cases, today when we, all together, have 20 cases, the world has 9 million cases.
‘This means that we are living in a world where this will continue. So, it is important that we live in a world where there is a balance where economic activities continue,’ Faure added.
When the COVID-19 pandemic first broke out, the island nation reported 11 cases, all of whom have fully recovered before the country was declared coronavirus-free on April 5.
