Germany has announced that it will remove South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini entirely from its list of COVID-19 high-risk areas as of 30 January.

Germany’s federal government agency and research institute – Robert Koch Institute (RKI) – announced that it would lift the travel ban against several countries including South Africa on January 4, but travellers still needed to complete online health declarations. Now, South African visitors no longer have to do so.

According to the government’s website, all travellers aged six years or older who have stayed in South Africa, Lesotho or Eswatini in the last ten days must hold proof of the following upon entering Germany:

  • a negative COVID-19 test result or
  • proof of a full COVID-19 vaccination or
  • proof of recovery from an infection.

This also applies to travellers transiting Germany.
