South African aviation industry has highest possible safety rating

Transport minister Fikile Mbalula has announced that the South African aviation industry’s safety and security standards are ‘on par with international standards,’ reports BusinessTech.

Mbalula spoke at the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) on Tuesday, 8 November, stating that South Africa has maintained a Category 1 status in ‘a safety index conducted by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO),’ which is the highest possible safety rating.

‘The implication for South African operators is that they can fly or operate directly into the United States unhindered. Simply put, a Category 1 status means that the two countries’ safety systems are on par,’ Mbalula said. US travel volume into South Africa has increased, positively affecting our economy.

The global average safety standard is 69%, while  South Africa has significantly increased its safety standards since 2017 to 87.39%. This is excellent news for our tourism and business industries.
