South African administrators are putting the country on the map in the governing body of international motorsport.
Two of the country’s top administrators have been appointed to prominent positions in the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), and a third has recently completed a four-year term as a member of the FIA’s International Court of Appeal.
Two of the three are long-standing members of the Western Province Motor Club at Killarney, and both are still active competitors.
Dr Greg Mills, who is the president of the Western Province Motor Club and an active endurance racing competitor, has been appointed a commissioner of the International Historical Commission, which promotes the preservation and enjoyment of historical vehicles. Mills is also the director of the Brenthurst Foundation, a guest lecturer at Nato’s Higher Defence College, and an international adviser, as well as a director of Motorsport South Africa, the controlling body of motorsport in South Africa.
Anton Roux, who has been the chairman of Motorsport South Africa since 2019, has been appointed to serve on the FIA Senate, the top-ranked body of the FIA that oversees the organisation’s management and finances. Roux has been the chairman of the Audit and Risk committees of all the insurance operations within the FirstRand Group for the past six years; he was previously CEO of Aon in sub-Saharan Africa.
Advocate Andre Bezuidenhout, a long-time member of the Western Province Motor Club at Killarney and an active competitor, recently completed a four-year term as a member of the FIA’s International Court of Appeal, the final appeal tribunal for motorsport. He will be eligible for re-election in two years’ time.
Bezuidenhout has practised at the bar for 29 years, has been an acting judge in the high court, and has been president of the National Motorsport Appeals Court since 1996. He is regarded as an international expert in motor racing law.
These appointments to motorsport’s world governing bodies confirm the influence and respect accorded to South African expertise in the international world of motorsport.
The former president of the FIA, Jean Todt, expressed his support for the extension of Killarney’s lease and it is his successor, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who has announced the latest appointments of South African motorsport administrators to the FIA.
This is an exciting accomplishment for the South African world of motorsport.
