Tiffindell Ski Resort in southern Drakensberg has officially closed its doors and is up for sale.

Tiffindell, South Africa’s only ski resort, has updated its website with a statement confirming its permanent closure.

The resort, an idyllic mountain retreat, was known as the go-to base for skiing and snowboarding in the winter in South Africa.

In summer, Tiffindell pivoted with adventure offerings – hiking, 4×4 tracks, and fishing.

Due to lockdown restrictions in 2020 and 2021, the resort was forced to halt operations. In 2023, restrictions were not lifted in time for the resort to prepare for ski season, reports Travel News.

In addition to restrictions imposed by COVID, inconsistent snowfall over the years added to Tiffindell’s downfall. Even with snowmaking machines, expenses to run the equipment created unsustainable expenses for the business.

The ski resort has served snow-seeking South Africans for over three decades and has ranked as the 19th best ski run in the world, as per CNN in 2014.

Chris Stevens, a longtime supporter of Tiffindell and CEO of Chris Stevens Real Estate will be handling the property sale.
