Africa Leads Growth
Africa remains the dominant source of tourists, making up 76% of arrivals. Zimbabwe led with 2,183,260 visitors (up 3.6%), while Ghana saw an impressive 149% increase, driven by a visa waiver introduced in November 2023.
Strong Growth from Key Markets
The Americas saw a 10.9% increase, with the U.S. leading at 372,362 arrivals. Brazil surged by 94.2% to 49,855 due to improved connectivity. Europe recorded a 1.1% rise, with Germany growing 4% and the UK remaining the top European market despite a slight decline.
Asia & Middle East Trends
China led Asia’s 4.2% growth, while Japan saw a 31.8% rise. Middle Eastern arrivals dropped by 16.1%, though Saudi Arabia posted a 12.1% increase.
With continued marketing and air connectivity improvements, South Africa’s tourism sector will expand further in 2025.
‘It is encouraging to see that despite economic uncertainties in various parts of the world, the global tourism sector is growing. It is even more encouraging that our country follows the same trend and trajectory,’ Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille said.
