In a rare wildlife interaction captured on video at Kariega Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape, a white rhino mother and her calf come face-to-face with two lions feasting on a blesbok antelope.

The footage, recorded by a Kariega Game Reserve guide, Melissa, and shared on Facebook by the reserve, shows the peaceful coexistence between the two powerful species.
What makes the encounter particularly special is the calm demeanour displayed by all animals involved, especially the adult rhino who, according to reserve officials, has had previous encounters with this lion coalition.
“It is quite incredible that they all seem quite relaxed,” the reserve noted in their social media post describing the scene. “The white rhino adult in particular has encountered the lions frequently and is very experienced with them.”
White rhinos, despite their impressive size and strength, are herbivores that generally avoid confrontation with predators when possible. Though, they are fiercely protective over their calves.
