In the fight against marine pollution, Howard Warrington aims to raise funds by swimming from Bloubergstrand to Robben Island 100 times, becoming the fourth person in the world to do so.
Pollution kills about one million marine mammals a year. About six million metric tons of pollution enter the ocean annually, resulting in rope entanglements, strandings and harmful plastic consumption, among other dire consequences.
On average, the Cape of Good Hope Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) says, it costs R450 to rescue and rehabilitate a single marine mammal.
With his #Swim4Survival challenge, Warrington’s goal is to raise R100 000 for the organisation.
He has completed 93 crossings so far, covering a distance of about 7.4km each time. The swim can take up to four hours to complete.
