The iconic Table Mountain Cableway will undergo a comprehensive maintenance shutdown from Monday, 15 July to Sunday, 1 September 2024. Weather permitting, the service will resume operations on Monday, 2 September 2024. This prolonged closure aligns with the Cableway’s regular maintenance schedule, adhering to international standards.

During this period, a full cable replacement will be performed for the first time since the major revamp in 1997. Additionally, essential maintenance of the hanging and running gear will be carried out, following the specifications set by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).

All commercial and public outlets at both the Upper and Lower Stations, including shops, restaurants, and ablution facilities, will remain closed to the public throughout the maintenance period. Despite the closure of the Cableway, Table Mountain itself will still be accessible to hikers. Most routes and walkways will be open, except for those directly under the cable pathway due to overhead work.

Hikers are advised to be cautious of changing weather conditions and should be prepared to hike both up and down the mountain as the Cableway will not be in operation. It’s recommended to hike with a registered guide and adhere to safety guidelines.

Despite the shutdown, visitors with birthdays during the maintenance period can still enjoy the free birthday special. Birthday tickets can be collected in September 2024 by presenting a valid South African ID document, driver’s license, or birth certificate indicating a birthday within the seven-week maintenance period.

For Cable Card holders, cards valid during the maintenance period will be automatically extended by seven weeks, ensuring that regular visitors do not miss out on their benefits.

While the Cableway undergoes this necessary upkeep, enthusiasts and tourists are reminded that all facilities, including restrooms, eateries, and shops, will be unavailable. Hiking up and down Table Mountain during this time is at one’s own risk, and proper preparation and safety measures are paramount.

For further updates and detailed safety guidelines, visitors are encouraged to check the official Table Mountain Cableway website.
