A wildfire that erupted in the Newlands Ravine on Sunday morning continues to wreak havoc on Cape Town’s Table Mountain. Strong winds are causing flare-ups that threaten Devil’s Peak and Vredehoek.

Firefighters, who worked through the night, resumed efforts at first light on Wednesday, supported by two helicopters and a spotter plane. Authorities remain concerned about worsening wind conditions, which could intensify the blaze.
‘Of particular concern at this stage is the wind prediction for the afternoon, which could significantly impact the Devil’s Peak section of the fire,’ said SANParks spokesperson JP Louw.
Eighty-three firefighters have been deployed, with an additional 20 responding to fires at Signal Hill and Ocean View on Tuesday night. Thick smoke has forced the closure of Tafelberg Road, halting operations at the Table Mountain Cableway.
Hiking trails in Newlands, Devil’s Peak, and Maclear’s Beacon remain indefinitely closed due to fire damage, including rockfalls and burnt boardwalks. Despite warnings, some hikers have ignored trail closures, prompting renewed calls for public cooperation.
Authorities urge residents and visitors to adhere to safety measures as firefighters work to contain the blaze and prevent further destruction.
