Talks of CapeNature taking over Table Mountain still “just talks”

CapeNature says that reports about its management taking over Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) from SANParks are just ‘talks about talks.’

These reports arose from a suggestion made during CapeNature’s annual report to the provincial government when CapeNature was asked about the rationalisation of protected areas.

TMNP was then cited as an example of a protected area that could be reconfigured and managed under CapeNature.

General Manager at CapeNature, Petro van Zyl, told Business Insider that the local organisation managing more protected areas in the province could be a possible scenario but again reiterated that TMNP was just an example.

The Western Cape minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, believes that CapeNature could do a “better job” of managing safety and conservation in the park, which has become more of a problem recently.

‘With the exceptional management displayed by CapeNature, it would only make sense for this park to also be run by this entity,’ he said before calling on SANParks to duly consider the benefits to nature conservation if there was a transfer of management.
