Thailand entry requirements for tourists

Posted on 9 November 2020 By Anita Froneman

Thailand is open for tourists, but certain regulations and requirements apply. Initially only people from countries considered low-risk were able to apply and receive visas.

Now Thailand is allowing mid-risk countries, such as the UK, USA, Ireland, Scandinavian countries, and more to apply for a 60-day tourist visa.

The 60-day tourist visa can be extended to a 90-day stay but this is the maximum extension.

Low-risk countries only can apply and receive the Special Tourist Visa, which allows for a 90-day stay. These include Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, China and Hong Kong.

Phi Phi Island is a popular tourist destination.

Saffas can still plan a holiday getaway to the popular island destination. Here’s what you need to know.

  • Applicants will need to show evidence of medical and travel insurance that covers COVID-19. The insurance needs to cover at least $100,000 (R1,545,570) in medical treatment.
  • Travellers must present proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to flying.
  • All travelers will be given a second COVID-19 PCR test upon arrival.
  • If a traveller tests positive, they will be transferred to a state hospital.
  • If a traveller tests negative, they must quarantine for a 14-day quarantine period in a state-approved facility.

The World Health Organization advises visitors to Thailand to keep away from crowds, and be cautious in places that are known to be crowded such as airports.

Thailand has a total of 3,840 COVID-19 cases; 3,661 recoveries and 60 deaths as of November 9.
