Thai authorities will start collecting a 300-baht (R157) fee from foreign tourists arriving in the country from June, the country’s Tourism and Sports Minister, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, announced.
The minister said that the fund will be used to support visitors involved in accidents and develop tourism destinations.
‘Fees won’t be collected from foreigners with work permits and border passes,’ Minister Phiphat commented.
The country expects 25 million tourist arrivals in 2023, more than the 11.8 that travelled to Thailand in 2022. Border pass holders, cruise passengers and people visiting for a day trip without an overnight stay will be exempt from the fee.
Expatriates who hold a work permit will have to pay the fee on arrival but are eligible for a refund later.
