The Louvre to reopen in July

Posted on 24 June 2020

The famous Musée du Louvre in Paris has announced plans to reopen on July 6 as France emerges from lockdown. Visitors will need to book time slots in advance, as well as wear a mask inside.

In a statement, Jean-Luc Martinez, the president-director of the Musée du Louvre said: ‘The Louvre is happy to announce that it will be reopening its doors after these weeks of quarantine that we have all endured. Visiting conditions will be adapted to adhere strictly to the recommendations made by health authorities, as we want everyone to feel safe at the Louvre, whether they are coming for work or pleasure. This period has not been easy, but commitment and collaboration will see us overcome the difficulties we are facing.’

Martinez continued: ‘Although we have been providing resources on Louvre masterpieces online, nothing can replace the emotion felt when standing face to face with such treasures—the raison d’être of all museums.’

– – – 🌎 Wednesday, it’s #LouvreHistory ! Today, let’s focus on this painting by Louis Béroud! ⤵️ – 👑 The 24 monumental canvases displayed in the Médicis gallery were originally housed in the Luxembourg palace, home of the Italian-born French queen Marie de Médicis. Painted by Rubens between 1622 and 1625, they depict episodes from the queen’s life. – 🖼 This work shows the display of 18 paintings of the Médicis cycle in 1904. They were then installed in the former Salle des États of the Pavillon des Sessions (now the Spanish paintings room). This room was refurbished in 1953 to accommodate all the paintings. Finally, they were transfered to the Richelieu wing in 1993. – 👨‍🎨 This painting was made by Louis Béroud. This painter used to spend a lot of time at the Louvre copying paintings. Fun fact: it was him who, on his way to copying Mona Lisa, noticed and reported her disappearance in August 1911! – 📷 © RMN – Grand Palais (Musée du Louvre) / Franck Raux . . . #Louvre #MuséeDuLouvre
