Safety is always a top priority for travellers when taking to the skies, and AirlineRatings has compiled a list of the safest airlines in the world across a number of categories.
These include an airline’s crash and serious incident record, fleet age, financial position and pilot training among other things. Qantas came out as the safest airline in the world, with an almost squeaky clean track record.

Editor-in-chief, Geoffrey Thomas said: ‘Qantas has been the lead airline in virtually every major operational safety advancement over the past 60 years and has not had a fatality in the pure-jet era.’
The other airlines in the top 10 of safety are:

3. Air New Zealand
4. Singapore Airlines
5. Emirates
6. Eva Air
7. Etihad Airways
8. Alaska Airlines
9. Cathay Pacific
10. British Airways
The rating platform also assessed airlines in terms of COVID-19 compliance specifically in a separate rating. The criteria included the airlines’ website information on COVID-19, the provision of face masks for passengers and PPE for crew, the modification of meal services, the deep cleaning of aircraft, the provision of personal sanitiser kits, and social distancing on board.
The 20 safest carriers in terms of COVID-19 compliance are, alphabetically:
AirBaltic, Air New Zealand, Alaska Airlines, All Nippon Airways, AirAsia, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Delta Air Lines, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Eva Air, Japan Airlines, JetBlue, KLM, Korean Air, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Qatar Airways and WestJet.
