Three men have been arrested following the alleged killing of four rhinos in Kruger National Park on 1 July.
A visitor to the park reported gunshots, prompting the immediate response of field rangers and a helicopter. It was then that the three men – between the ages of 23 and 49 – were found in possession of a hunting rifle equipped with a silencer, three bags, four cell phones and three knives.
Police at Skukuza Rest Camp apprehended the suspects. Upon further inspection of the scene, three rhino horns and four rhino carcasses were found in the area. The fourth horn had not yet been removed, according to SAPS.
The suspects face charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, poaching and illegally entering Kruger Park. They are expected to appear in Bushbuckridge Magistrates Court on 4 July 2022.
