After their money ran out, a group of six tourists were found hiding out in a cave near Rishikesh, northern India during lockdown.
The group lived there for nearly a month before they were found by the police and sent to quarantine at an ashram (spiritual institution) on Sunday 19 April, according to a police official.
The tourists, four men and two women from France, Turkey, Ukraine, the United States and Nepal, first stayed at a hotel, but could no longer afford the extended stay imposed by the nationwide lockdown. The group then sought refuge in the cave, said Mukesh Chand, spokesperson for Uttarakhand police.
‘We have asked them to self-quarantine for two weeks as a precaution but the group seemed healthy,’ Chand told CNN.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a nationwide lockdown on 24 March which is planned to continue until 3 May. India’s Ministry of Tourism has launched a website where any foreign nationals stuck in India can get in contact with the relevant authorities. Visit Stranded In India for more information.
