Ride-hailing platform Uber has reminded its users about passenger and luggage capacity guidelines for its services in South Africa.

Rules for Uber riders in South Africa

The rules aim to balance rider comfort, safety, and vehicle space, particularly when luggage is involved.

Under the policy, passenger limits vary by service type:

  • Uber Go allows a maximum of two riders.
  • Uber X, Comfort, and Black permit three passengers each.
  • Uber XL and Van accommodate up to six and seven passengers, respectively.

All categories permit luggage, though the company advises travellers to confirm space availability directly with drivers. The e-hailing platform added in its official blog post that the guidelines are advisory and may depend on vehicle size. “If unsure, we recommend contacting the driver to confirm,” the company stated.

Other notable news from the e-hailing platform in South Africa have included the launch of Uber Moto in parts of Johannesburg, in January.

The motorbike riding service has been described by Uber as ‘affordable’ and ‘time-saving.’ The two wheel alternative aims to help riders to “beat the traffic, navigate narrow lanes easily, and save time”.

The service is currently available only around Johannesburg West and trips start from as little as R18.

Uber goes electric in 2025

In 2024, Uber announced that it would also be introducing a fleet of electric vehicles in South Africa this year. The introduction of 200 BYD (Build Your Dreams) electric vehicles will start with a pilot programme in Johannesburg.

The e-hailing service announced that 100 000 new BYD electric vehicles would be rolled out onto its platform in key markets worldwide. BYD is a Chinese-owned electric vehicle manufacturing company with a growing presence in South Africa.

Uber on safari?

Earlier this year, the e-hailing giant also launched a limited-time offer, granting customers the opportunity to book safari trips through the app. The service ran for the month of January, news of it becoming a permanent offering on the app has been silent.

Uber on the water?

Over the pond in Europe, Uber has announced ambitious plans to expand their network to offer a unique aquatic experience – e-hailing by boat.

In March, Orbit Clipper, the UK’s first fully electric, zero-emission cross-river passenger ferry, was launched on the Thames. The Uber Boat was built at Wight Shipyard Co in the Isle of Wight. According to reports, the vessel’s ground-breaking design marks a significant step in sustainable travel and the future of London’s iconic river transport system.
