Zimbabwe’s all-female anti-poaching unit, Akashinga, are also vegan. They are fed a completely plant-based diet by the Back-to-Black-Roots Vegan Kitchen and Garden.

According to LiveKindly, the kitchen has been run by Nicola Kagoro who also goes by the name Chef Cola, a Cape Town trained vegan chef since 2017. It has been receiving funding from the VegFund since 2018 and is expected to feeds 171 rangers, staff and trainees.

The kitchen is in the bush and so doesn’t have access to electricity. The food prepared is made using locally-sources traditional ingredients and focuses on making meals related to the traditional African diets.

Cola explains that this kitchen has a four phase transformation plan, with the first phase being the move to a plant based diet. The kitchen aims to grow with the camp, as more rangers are included in the unit. They also plan to plant an orchard and a cabin to grow mushrooms.
