What brought the snow across Gauteng

Posted on 11 July 2023 By David Henning

Residents of Gauteng and parts of Mpumalanga awoke to snowfall on Monday morning that had turned the landscape, including Johannesburg, into a winter wonderland.

From Dullstroom in Mpumalanga to Johanessburg and across Gauteng, everyone was fascinated by the snow, an extremely rare occurrence in these parts of the world.

This phenomenon has been attributed to a combination of events, with meteorologists theorising it was due to a convergence of cold air masses from the south and east with a low-pressure system moving into the region, IOL reports

The cold, combined with moist air, caused ice crystals to form, which led to snowflakes descending across parts of the country.

Pictures of snow across the country kept coming in, with small towns in the highlands of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal completely cut off as roads and mountain passes became unpassable.
