A river of wine flooded the streets of Portuguese town São Lourenco do Bairro on Sunday, 10 September.
When two of their tanks burst, local Levira Distillery lost 2 271 kilolitres, or approximately enough wine to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool. The town is on a steep hillside, making it easy for the wine to pour down the narrow streets, reported the New York Post.
Local officials and firefighters immediately diverted the wine to a nearby field before it could enter the Certima River.
The distillery shared, ‘We assume full responsibility for the costs associated with cleaning and repairing the damage, having teams do so immediately. We are committed to resolving this situation as quickly as possible.’
