An attempted sexual assault on Devil’s Peak has prompted renewed safety concerns for hikers and joggers frequenting Cape Town’s mountain trails. On April 9, 2025, a 45-year-old woman was found injured on the slopes of Devil’s Peak after reportedly being accosted by an unknown suspect while jogging near De Waal Drive.

Following a report from her family that she was missing, SANParks launched a search operation, says Cape Argus.
The victim was located on the mountain with visible bruises and scratches. A suspect was also found on-site and subsequently detained by the South African Police Service (SAPS). The investigation is ongoing, and police have called for any witnesses or individuals with relevant information to come forward.
SANParks spokesperson JP Louw confirmed that the incident is being taken seriously, adding that the safety of park users remains a top priority. In recent years, SANParks has increased security measures across Table Mountain National Park, including the deployment of a specialised K9 unit, frequent ranger patrols, and coordinated operations with SAPS and community safety organisations.

The attack is one of several recent incidents on Devil’s Peak that have heightened concerns about public safety.
In February 2025, a 28-year old hiker was rescued after surviving two days stranded in a ravine due to a fall. Just months earlier, in September 2024, the body of a 20-year-old American tourist was discovered on the same mountain after she went missing during a solo hike.
These events have raised calls for further action and awareness regarding mountain safety.
Authorities continue to urge visitors to remain vigilant, travel in groups, stay on designated trails and inform others of their intended routes.
The public is also encouraged to report any suspicious activity or safety hazards to law enforcement or park officials.
