Rates for boutique hotels, B&Bs, and guest houses across South Africa surged by 40% during the Women’s Day long weekend in August, according to an analysis of reservation data by RoomRaccoon, a hotel management system.
Covering over 4 500 rooms nationwide, the data revealed that the average daily rate (ADR) from August 8-12 spiked to R1 810, peaking at R2 070 on Friday, August 9. This is a significant increase compared to the winter average ADR of R1 287 from June 1 to August 12, and just slightly below the year-to-date average of R1 991.

According to Tourism Update RoomRaccoon’s findings also highlighted that independent hotels generated R5.4 million in ancillary revenue during the long weekend. Popular add-ons included airport transfers, breakfasts, spa treatments, and purchases of wine and MCC, demonstrating the effectiveness of upselling strategies.

Niels Verspui, Market Head of RoomRaccoon, noted the surprising results, stating, ‘It’s remarkable to see a long weekend in winter generating results nearly on par with the summer peak season. This rate shows that independent hotels and lodges are effectively capitalising on long weekend local demand – even during traditionally slower periods.’
