The second-largest diamond in the world has been discovered in Botswana.
The rough 2 492-carat stone was discovered in the Karowe Diamond Mine which is owned by Canadian firm Lucara Diamond.
In a statement released by the mining company, it was clarified that diamond recovery x-ray detection technology was used as part of the discovery.
The diamond is the biggest find since the 3,106-carat diamond found in Cullinan, South Africa in 1905.
According to BBC News, Botswana’s government has acknowledged it as largest diamond ever discovered in the southern African state. Prior to this discovery, Botswana’s biggest diamond was the 1,758-carat stone which was also found at Karowe Diamond Mine in 2019.
In a report by The South African, Botswana was highlighted as one of the largest diamond producers on the globe. Its economy is heavily dependent on diamonds, which amount for approximately 80% of the country’s exports.
‘This discovery symbolizes Botswana’s continued ascent as a global leader in diamond production. It represents not only the unparalleled wealth found in Botswana’s soil, but also the remarkable progress the nation has made in developing its diamond industry for the benefit of its citizens,’ read the statement by Lucara Diamond.
