Zimbabwe wildlife authorities are set to remove the horns of its entire rhino population in a widespread effort to deter poaching, the National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority said.
More than 1 000 rhinos will undergo surgical removal by wildlife vetenerians, according to Zim Parks spokesperson, Tinashe Farawo.
This is an extremely expensive procedure, which requires aerial support with a chopper to dart the rhinos.
Zimbabwe is home to the fourth largest black rhino population, where more than 8 000 of the black and white rhino population have been lost to poaching in South Africa.
