Zimbabwean man falls into gorge at Victoria Falls

Posted on 2 January 2021

A Zimbabwean man visiting the famous Victoria Falls fell into a gorge along the falls, and has still not been found.

Zimbabwe national parks (Zimparks) confirmed to TimesLIVE that the 40-year-old tourist fell into the gorge around 2:30 pm on January 1.

Accidents are not common at Victoria Falls as there are balustrades to protect tourists from going over the edge. However, on occasion some tourists have found themselves in trouble over the thunderous falls. The rescue team has yet to locate him.

This is not the first New Year’s incident at the Falls. In 2005, a tourist from Johannesburg fell 40-metres down a rock face on New Year’s Eve. He did not survive.

Victoria Falls, also known as Mosi-oa-Tunya (translated to The Smoke that Thunders) records hundreds of cubic metres of water flow over its edge per second. As of December 23, the water was flowing at 513 cubic metres per second.

The most recent incident at the falls happened in April 2020, when a man from Victoria Falls fell into the Zambezi River down a gorge before a boulder crush both his legs. However, he was rescued and survived.
