The year is slowly but surely working its way up to the holiday season where many families take time off from work and school to spend time together.
December is known for its sunny – sometimes scorching – climate throughout South Africa, making it perfect for outdoors activities. Spending time in nature is also the best environment to practice social distancing in. Fresh air, open spaces and minimal common surfaces to touch means less risk of contracting or spreading COVID-19.
Here are our top recommendations on what to do when boredom strikes so put on some sun screen, lace up and head out.
1. Road trip
If you live in South Africa, you need to travel the country by road at least once. Travelling with your family or those you live with poses no threat to others or yourselves, and is a great way to spend time together while seeing beautiful places. Take your time and stop as often as you’d like. You’ll be surprised at all the quaint little farm stalls, coffee shops and tourist attractions along the way you would otherwise have missed.

2. Snorkel
December holidays and the beach are almost synonymous. If you enjoy spending time in the ocean, grab a snorkel and fins and go explore. If you are a qualified scuba diver, find out about places you have not been to before and give it a go. No crowds, no sanitiser and a mask of a different kind will be a welcome change. Always be respectful of the ocean and only snorkel or dive in safe areas. Do not touch or engage with coral reefs or any marine animals you may come across and make sure you leave nothing behind in the water.
3. Camping
It’s that time of year when we dig out the gas stoves and brave the mosquitoes for some bundu bashing. Camping is a magnificent way to unplug for a day or two. Sitting around a braai at night, roasting marshmallows and telling stories creates invaluable memories. Fresh air is no doubt good for the soul and as long as you camp with your housemates, it’s safe as can be. Remember to still wear your mask in public and sanitise regularly.

4. Safari
The bushveld is calling. A South African staple, safari is not only an enriching and wonderful experience but is also social distancing-friendly. Go with your family on a self-drive or join a tour operator, but make sure the vehicle is open air and that the group will function at a low capacity. Remember to wear your mask at all times and sanitise regularly. Keep the binoculars and camera close at hand – you never know what you will find!

5. Picnic
Picnics are underrated. You can plan a picnic according to your budget, taste and preference. The options of beautiful green parks, pristine beaches and gardens bursting with life are endless. Invite your loved ones, pack a basket and make a day of it. You might even spot some wildlife, come across a waterfall or feel like taking a stroll. Keep away from the busy places and seek out the quiet, lesser-known spots for an extra social distancing-friendly experience.
