Bourke’s Luck Potholes are not just a fascinating sight but a prominent landmark marking the start of the Blyde River Canyon. A 700-meter walk will take you through these striking formations, sculpted by centuries of swirling water.

Though Mpumalanga boasts icons like the Three Rondawels, God’s Window, and the Blyde River Canyon, Bourke’s Luck Potholes are definitely a must-see, if you’re passing through.

These geological wonders are the result of relentless water erosion where the Treur River merges with the Blyde River, creating a series of cylindrical rock formations that look almost otherworldly.

To appreciate these natural sculptures, which are adorned in a spectrum of white, yellow, and dark brown hues thanks to the mineral-rich soil, you’ll need to venture north of Graskop on the R532, located along the Panorama Route.

For the best views and photographs, you’ll find metal bridges and walkways that offer various angles and perspectives of these unique formations. The name “Bourke’s Luck Potholes” pays homage to Tom Burke, the gold prospector whose claim near the site contributed to its name.
