Saturday 19 March will see a vibrant celebration of grassroots Cape Town car culture at Killarney with MSA Drag Racing, Drifting and Spinning – and spectators are welcome.
The rules for the anything-goes Drag Racing contest are simple: As long as the car (or motorcycle) will pass a strict safety inspection, you can run any tyres you want, with or without lights, bumpers, original glass or interior trim.
Competitors will be placed into classes based on qualifying times; that way the contestants in each run will always be evenly matched. Then it’s all about lightning-fast reactions and getting the power down – wheelspin is easy, but it costs you time!
There are classes for everything, including superbikes and streetcars, so you’re guaranteed a full day of straight-line action, with a variety of food and drinks on sale from upmarket vendors who know just how to re-fuel motorsport fans.
By contrast, wheelspin is the name of the game in drifting, as the drivers throw their cars into long, sustained slides. It’s all about balance between throttle, brakes and steering – all three inputs must be exactly right to keep the car on course for a perfect run and maximum points.
Competitive spinning has evolved from street-corner exhibitionism into an extraordinary combination of brute force and finesse. It demands ultra-rapid changes of direction at surprisingly low speeds, all while keeping the rear wheels spinning and sliding the car into and out of a series of obstacles or ‘boxes’.
Killarney cares about your health and well-being, so all competitors, crew members, officials and spectators are screened on entry, and you must wear a mask covering your nose and mouth, and keep a safe social distancing space of at least 1.5 metres between persons at all times.
Spectator tickets can be purchased at Computicket here. Tickets are R100 for adults, R40 for scholars under 16 and free for children under 12, as well as Western Province Motor Club members on production of their membership book at the gate.
There will also be a limited number of spectator tickets available at the gate.
Please bear in mind that once you have purchased your tickets online, you must still collect the physical tickets, including the free tickets for children under 12, at Computicket or the Computicket outlet at the Money Market counter in your nearest Shoprite, Checkers, Checkers Hyper or Usave store.
