Global Refill Day will take place this Wednesday, 6 November and is an international movement to end plastic pollution. Created by Green Peace, the day aims to demonstrate the changes that people want to large corporates.
To take part in Global Refill Day, all you have to do is take a reusable container to your local grocery store, coffee shop or eatery and ask for your purchase to be packaged in that.
By not opting for a single-use container, you can show these establishments that a reusable system is far more sustainable than using throwaway packaging that will inevitably get to a landfill.
If they accept, you can celebrate the win on social media, tag them and use the hashtag #ReuseRevolution. If they decline, do the same and tell them to join the #ReuseRevolution.
It is time for large, medium and small companies to be held accountable for the waste that they dispose of every day. Landfills in South Africa have been declared a ‘ticking timebomb’ and The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) says 98-million tonnes of waste is deposited across South Africa’s 826 landfill sites every year.
