There’s a reason that they call Montagu the gateway to the Klein Karoo. As you drive through the almost unreal rock arch on Route 62, you pass through a gateway that lifts you, rips you from your anxieties, and flings you to a world where you are in touch with your senses.
We’ve heard it all before; there’s just something about the Klein Karoo. Maybe it’s in the water. Maybe all the sugar in the muscadel. But while you lie in under the stars in an expansive veld staring at the stars from your own private wood-fired hot tub, something aligns.
The recent conjuncture bought me to Badenfontein’s new private luxury tents, situated 5km from Montagu in the beautiful Baden Valley.
A fitting addition to their selection of accommodation offerings which include five luxury self-catering cottages and a small campsite. Don’t worry if it sounds too crowded, there’s ample space around to be reclusive, maybe even skinny dip in the wood-fired hot tub.
Whether you find yourself in Vlakhuis or Veldmuis, the endearing names of the two luxury tents on the property (I’m told that there are more in the pipeline), you’ll find a tranquil environment with everything you need.
Each unit comes with a small self-catering kitchen, a bathroom with a shower, an outside shower, a braai place, a wood-fired hot tub and even wifi and an air conditioner. Just two and a half hours drive from Cape Town, it’s the perfect winter escape. It likely won’t be long enough. but it’ll do the trick.
