Although it is the smallest of nine provinces, Gauteng boasts a rich history and a vibrant cultural scene.

It is also home to a number of various attractions where the beauty and tranquility of nature can be enjoyed.

Here are a few attractions worth visiting when in the Gauteng province:

Apartheid Museum

Located in Johannesburg, the Apartheid Museum is one of South Africa’s most important historical attractions. At the popular museum, visitors are afforded the opportunity to learn more about the country’s past, and specifically the Apartheid era.

Visiting the museum presents the chance to travel back in time as you delve into how segregation took place based on race, language and even hair texture.

Moreover, the historical attraction boasts a number of interesting and informative exhibits. These include text panels, film footage and painful stories which expose the atrocities committed during the Apartheid era.

Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum

Soweto’s Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum serves as a tribute and memory of Hector Pieterson, together with the youth of 1976.

It tells the story of the 16th of June when youngsters united in resistance to Apartheid and an unfair education system.

At the historic attraction, visitors can travel back to the fateful day through evidence in the form of verbal testimonials, as well as pictures and audio-visual displays of the day’s happenings.

Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden

The magnificent Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden is one of the best places to immerse yourself in nature when in the Gauteng province. 

Established in 1982, the garden offers 300 hectares of lushness, vitality and serenity. Over 600 plant species form a backdrop of various hiking trails.

There are also 220 bird species, as well as reptiles and some other small mammals. A visit to the garden also comes with the chance to spot some honey badgers, hedgehogs or even some Verreaux’s eagles nesting near the waterfall.

The Wilds Nature Reserve

The Wilds Nature Reserve is located on the outskirts of Houghton and boasts calming natural beauty. The 16-hectare nature reserve offers exceptional hillside views and evergreen freshness.
There are numerous hiking trails and walking routes. Moreover, the green manicured lawns are the perfect place to sit and enjoy a picnic or some journaling in nature.

Lesedi Cultural Village

Located among the rocky hills of the Cradle of Humankind, the Lesedi Cultural Village is the ideal spot to learn more about African traditions.The attraction offers the fascinating exploration of Africa’s tribal history intertwined with African hospitality.

At the village, you can visit five traditional homesteads inhabited by Xhosa, Zulu, Ndebele, Basotho and Pedi tribes. You will receive insight on these different tribes and their traditional ways of life.
