Each year, between late September and early November, an ocean of vibrant purple petals glazes over the Gauteng province when the jacaranda trees bloom.
The jacaranda tree (Jacaranda mimosifolia) was introduced to the South African landscape in the 1800s. Originally from South America, the fantastical flora now covers a large portion of Gauteng. There is an estimated population of 70 000 jacaranda trees in the Gauteng region.
Jacaranda season has become a significant time of year for locals as it embodies the season of spring and brings life to the city.
For the best viewings of this natural phenomenon, hit the best spots like the union buildings in Pretoria, Klapperkof Nature Reserve (where there is also white jacarandas!) and finally, the suburb of Westcliff in Johannesburg.
