Are you considering exploring the happenings of the animal kingdom with your children? Here are our top tips to guide you as you plan a successful safari:

Choose a child-friendly safari lodge

Do thorough research when it comes to the accommodation you will be booking in order to ensure that it is child-friendly.

While most places are always happy to promote themselves in this space, some may not really live up to being truly child-friendly.

Find out about available specialist guides for kids, the rules at the accommodation, kiddies’ meals as well as other activities offered. Doing your research beforehand will help you to avoid disappointment.

Find an experienced children’s guide

Going on a safari with a guide who is experienced when it comes to children is highly beneficial.

If a guide is inspired and energized by children, this will encourage the passion for the wilderness in young minds and make the safari experience more insightful and worthwhile.

Have a plan for downtime

Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to go on a safari. This will leave you with plenty of free time in the afternoon.

Have a plan for that time period, especially because children can get bored quite easily.

Look into fun activities that they can enjoy during that time. Where possible, make use of your accommodation’s facilities to make this time more worthwhile.

Don’t forget the binoculars

A good pair of binoculars will enhance the safari experience. Sometimes, spotting animals in the distance and identifying birds may be hard. Binoculars make this easier and more interesting for your young ones.

Encourage them to ask questions

A safari offers the opportunity to learn and receive broadened knowledge on wildlife. By asking questions, your children will get the most out of the safari experience. Encourage them to engage with the guide and to ask any questions they may have. The curiosity will further fuel the guide’s passion to inform and educate.
