According to the 11th edition of the Expat Insider survey by InterNations, expats are happier in the country than they were last year.
In the recent survey, South Africa ranked 29th out of 53 countries. According to The South African, this is a significant improvement as South Africa has been in the bottom 10 for four years.
Personal Finances Index, Leisure and Housing are among the subcategories in which expats gave the country the highest ranking.
Major challenges remain in terms of the Safety and Security, as well as Travel and Transit categories.
The survey highlighted safety and security as the biggest concern for expats in South Africa. This is especially with regards to personal safety and political stability. In fact, more than half of the expats which participated in the survey rated the country’s personal safety as poor. The global average in this category is 8%.
Moreover, the survey participants noted public transportation as an area of concern. A large number of expats also indicated that they find it neither easy nor safe to get around by bicycle or on foot.
When it comes to the categories of Leisure Activities and Culinary Landscape, South Africa was ranked very fabourably.
The same can be said about Environment and Climate, as well as Healthcare.
Although healthcare was rated positively for its availability and quality, the affordability and accessibility thereof were expressed as areas in need of improvement.
