Mapungubwe National Park
The Mapungubwe National Park is an emblematic haven that resonates with many souls. It has profound historical ties as it protects the historical site of Mapungubwe Hill. The Hill was the capital of the Kingdom of Mapungubwe, as well as wildlife and forests along the Limpopo River. In 2003, Mapungubwe was announced as a World Heritage Site.
The Schoemansdal Voortrekker Town and Museum
If you’re a history buff, a visit to the Schoemansdal Voortrekker Town and Museum is an absolute must-do. It is located west of Louis Trichadt and is built in an authentic Voortrekker village which is reflective of the kind of lifestyle which was led in the mid-18th century.
Thulamela
Situated in the northern Kruger National Park, Thulamela is a stone walled site which dates back to approximately 450 – 500 years. The site tells the story of an ancient culture that settled in the area around the 15th century.
Masorini Archeological Site
Masorini is located about 11km from the Phalaborwa Gate (Kruger National Park). The ancestors of the Baphalaborwa used to stay there and they made a living from melting iron.
Today, the site is a restored village with stonewalls, grinding stones and a melting furnace which all date back to the 19thcentury. A visit to the village will provide you with insight into the economy and technology employed by hunter gatherers in the past, as well as people of the Iron Age.
