Gauteng is home to a number of interesting tourist attractions that are worth visiting. Although it is the smallest province, it offers a number of worthwhile experiences amidst its hustle and bustle.
Here are some tourist attractions worth visiting in the Gauteng province:
Constitution Hill
Being a former prison complex, Constitution Hill tells the story of South Africa’s turbulent past, as well as the transition to democracy. The historical attraction was built in the 1890s. Moreover, it has previously incarcerated a number of well-known political prisoners including Joe Slovo, Mahatma Gandhi, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Nelson Mandela. Today, it is home to the country’s Constitutional Court.
Soweto
When visiting the Gauteng province, it is an excellent idea to explore Soweto (originally an abbreviation for South Western Townships). Soweto is rich in history and boasts a vibrant atmosphere. There is plenty to explore and learn about.
Worth visiting is the iconic Vilakazi Street. It is the only street in the world that can claim to have had two Nobel Laureates, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela, as residents. If you are an adrenaline junkie, some bungee jumping at the Soweto Towers is also an excellent idea.
Voortrekker Monument
The Voortrekker Monument is a beacon of history standing tall on a hill with its granite structure basking in the sun’s glow. Inside, the monument is a treasure trove of historical narratives, each corner whispering tales of the Afrikaner people’s Great Trek. The panoramic views of Pretoria from the top are the cherry on top of this enriching experience.
Union Buildings
Located in Pretoria, the Union Buildings are a testament to architectural grandeur. The buildings, which serve as the South African government’s seat, are adorned with expansive gardens and a statue of the late struggle icon Nelson Mandela, embodying the nation’s spirit.
You can embark on a guided tour as you marvel at all the beauty and learn more about the country and its history.
Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden
The magnificent Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden is one of the best places to immerse yourself in nature when in the Gauteng province. Established in 1982, the garden offers 300 hectares of lushness, vitality and serenity. Over 600 plant species form a backdrop of various hiking trails. There are also 220 bird species, as well as reptiles and some other small mammals. A visit to the garden also comes with the chance to spot some honey badgers, hedgehogs or even some Verreaux’s eagles nesting near the waterfall.
