Every time my family visits from Holland, I take the opportunity to show them a new part of the country, preferably a part which I also haven’t seen before. Rocktail Beach Camp had been on my list for quite some time but it is not exactly on my doorstep so going by myself would have been a bit of a challenge. With the whole family though, it was GREAT!
Rocktail Beach Camp is situated in Maputaland about five hours north of Durban, South Africa. The road is very good up until the point where you park your car and your friendly Rocktail Beach driver will pick you up in a 4×4. It takes another 40 minutes on sandy roads to get to the camp.

The camp is situated in pristine, protected coastal forest and the walk to the beach is about 20 minutes. The 17 tented chalets are spacious and all look out onto the forest with the Indian Ocean behind it.There are seven family chalets with one double bed and two 3/4 beds in an adjoining room.
Rocktail Beach Camp is super kids friendly. When Rosie and I arrived in our chalet, they had sat up a little baby bath for Rosie in the shower. The most stunning view she ever had! Meals are also focused on families. For example one day there was pizza day, the next day a wrap day and so on.

There are plenty of activities to enjoy and I would recommend a minimum of three nights to explore as much as possible. We were not very lucky with the weather but that didn’t keep the boys from taking a first time SCUBA diving class in the pool, go snorkeling in the rock pools at low tide. My parents, Rosie and me drove with a private driver through the local communities and learned all about how life is in rural KwaZulu-Natal. It was cold and windy but nevertheless we were happy to be on the drive.

The camp is run by Wilderness Safaris, a responsible luxury tourism (read more about responsible tourism) company which celebrates 30 years of making a difference in Africa this year.
