An ideal escape: Tweede Tol in the Limietberg Nature Reserve

Posted on 28 September 2011

Whenever people see my pics of Tweede Tol, they ask me, ‘Where’s that, it looks amazing?’ It is amazing, and it’s only an hour and 15 minutes out of Cape Town, on Bain’s Kloof Pass.

It’s not exactly a secret spot, and come summertime, it’s packed, and you need to be there way before sunrise to get in. Generally, during the holiday season, you have to arrive before the gates open (08h00) because space is limited, and even then you might not make it in (some people stay over the night before to secure their spot in the queue). Once capacity is reached, you can forget about getting in (even if your mates/family made it in already).

There’s a large picnic area with braai spots, grassy patches and lots of trees. Swimming in the Witte River, with its awesome rock pool is a major highlight. Kids will love jumping off the big rock into the cool water.  If you’re camping at Tweede Tol, you have access to a another river and a series of rock pools. These are the spot’s real gems. The first rock pool and waterfall is beautiful. It’s got blue/green cool water with little waterfalls trickling into it. If you’re brave you can jump from a cliff into the pool (about four to five metres). There’s another (bigger) pool a bit further up the walk with a waterfall and some jumping spots as well.

Tweede Tol is part of the Limietberg Nature Reserve. All camping bookings must be made through Cape Nature and day visitors pay R30 a person and camping from R155 a site (max six people).
