Posted on 6 December 2024 By Louise Bell

Christmas movies usually feature snowy landscapes and winter goodness, so getting into the holiday spirit can be hard when temperatures are so lovely in South Africa. While this is a minor problem, to say the least, there are many ways in which sand can be swapped for snow to ensure a festive-filled time.

Unsure how to make your summer vacation by the beach infused with the Christmas spirit? Take a look at a few activities to have the ultimate sunny festive season.

Build a sandman

Building snowmen at Christmas indicates that this festive day is slowly approaching. While we might not be getting snow in most of South Africa, individuals can still enjoy this wholesome activity at the beach.

So, swap your usual sandcastle construction plans and get into the holiday spirit by building a sandman. With wet sand and sea shells for eyes, you’ll soon feel the jolly merriment the end of the year usually brings. Be sure to include a seaweed scarf to kit out your sandman in style.

Go sandboarding

While snowboarding and snow sledding are epic holiday adventures in the snow, South Africa has a summer alternative for all thrillseekers. Sandboarding is an excellent alternative if you want to join in on the fun.

South Africa has a fantastic array of sandboarding adventures from which you can choose. If you’re situated in the Western Cape, be sure to look at this ultimate sandboarding experience option.

Take a family Christmas card at the beach

Who says Christmas cards need to feature frosty landscapes? As South Africa heads into warmer temperatures at the end of the year, you can take your family holiday card to the beach.

Family Christmas cards usually feature a short synopsis of the year the family endured, highlighting things such as new additions and achievements. While this is generally considered a North American practice, it is an excellent idea to celebrate the year and share news with close companions on your mailing list.

Make sand angels

The most minor things in life can usually make the most significant difference. As the absence of snow during the holiday season brings a slightly bitter feeling in individuals, one way out of this funk is to participate in snowy activities in your own way.

Snow angels are generally a feature when having fun in the snow on a frosty day out as Christmas comes closer. The South African version thus makes sand angels by the beach. While it might be a simple activity, sparking a sense of childlike wonder and joy is essential to making December feel festive.
