Small towns to visit in KwaZulu-Natal

The KwaZulu-Natal province is known for its stunning landscapes, as well as its warm weather, rich history and vibrant culture.

Although Durban and other larger cities often steal the spotlight, the beautiful province is also home to some small towns that offer worthwhile experiences.

Here’s a look at three of the best small towns to visit in KZN: 

Mtunzini

Mtunzini is nestled approximately halfway along KwaZulu-Natal’s coastline. It offers a serene coastal escape and is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty and unique wildlife.

The town is also celebrated among birdwatchers for being a sanctuary for the rare palm-nut vulture.

When visiting Mtunzini, you can enjoy lush greenery and tranquil surroundings. The destination also offers beach bliss and an opportunity to enjoy a good game of golf at the Mtunzini Country Club.

Howick

Midmar Dam is Howick’s playground, surrounded by a nature reserve,
with many places to camp and picnic beside the water.

Located in the heart of the KZN Midlands, Howick began as a crossroads between the coast and the interior.

The destination boasts picturesque landscapes and interesting historical significance worth exploring.

It also offers a couple of attractions worth exploring. These include the iconic and magnificent Howick Falls, as well as the Nelson Mandela Capture Site.

Underberg

Beneath the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg mountain range, one finds quaint Underberg. It is renowned for its natural beauty and is the perfect base for outdoor enthusiasts.

The town features a few grocery stores, a butchery, clothing stores, quaint pubs and some restaurants amongst other things.

When visiting Underberg, you can enjoy a number of activities. Nearby, the Mzimkhulu River runs and is perfect for fly-fishing, swimming, canoeing, and tubing. You can also go for hikes, explore the rock art sites or even brove the Sani Pass to enjoy a unique and breathtaking tour up the iconic mountain.
