The Kilimanjaro Kit Diaries: Socks

Posted on 18 September 2009

You’d think a sock would be simple, but there’s a lot of science to socks. You need three different kinds for Kilimanjaro: liners, trekking socks and a pair of summit socks.

We tested some of the Mund range, because I was told they’re Serious. You could do with a Serious Summit Sock, I think. They’re a Spanish make and although they’re not yet widely available in South Africa, you can contact Outward Ventures to find them.

Sock 1: The Liner – Mund Timanfaya
The temperature range for this sock is in the 20s and it’s mostly concerned with keeping your feet cool and dry. The fabric is heat reflective, heat conductive, moisture wicking, anti-static, anti-microbial and anti-odour. They have a lot of patents for a pair of socks. There’s Lycra (R) for fit to prevent blisters, Coolmax (R) for heat and moisture control and X-Static (R), which is a fibre made with a layer of 99.9% pure silver which prevents stinkiness. I wore one pair for two long days of hiking and there was nothing to smell.
RRP: R105

Sock 2: Trekking – Mund Teide
The temperature range for this sock is around 17?C and it has Coolmax (R) to wick away moisture (sweat to you and I). There are smooth toe seams, extra strength toe and heel reinforcements and an elasticated arch brace to hold the sock in place. Very comfy.
RRP: R109

Sock 3: The Summit – Mund K2
Summit socks are made for cold conditions at the top of mountains. The K2 is apparently suitable for temperatures of around -25?C (yes, minus) although it seems no bulkier than the Teide. Apparently it does this with Thermolite (R). My toes were nice and toasty on summit day, although the temperature was only minus 7?C.
RRP: R179

Ray’s tip:
Take care of your feet Your feet are your means of transport… look after them & you’ll enjoy the trip a lot more. Be sure to clean them properly after each day, dry them & air them! Using something like Bactroban helps keep any chance of infection at bay…
