The ultimate guide to backyard camping

Posted on 18 May 2020 By Anita Froneman

As the lockdown drags on, we have to get more creative by the day. Many have taken to the age old adventure of backyard camping with their families.

While we still have some mild autumn weather across most parts of the country, make the best of it by camping (or glamping) in your own garden. When the weather gets cold, move the party to the lounge.

Whether you plan a fun-filled night with the kids or a romantic candle lit evening with your partner, here are some pro tips to make it extra special.

1. Build a tepee

If you don’t have a tent or are in the mood for something different, build your own tepee. You can use any materials you have like old blankets and sticks. It’s much more cosy than a tent!

2. String fairy lights

It’s all about the atmosphere, right? Fairly lights or stringed bulbs add a warm touch and look beautiful. Grab a few Christmas lights too if you want more colour!

3. Make hot drinks and snacks

The best part of camping out is the eats and treats. As the evenings are getting chilly, make hot chocolate or Milo and keep in a thermos, whipping out the camping mugs when everyone gets sleepy.

4. Build a (safe) fire

Nothing says camping like a big toasty fire to sit around. You can easily build a cement fire place, or you can use a braai. Cook together over the fire for some quality family time. Roasting marshmallows are a must, of course.

5. Scavenger hunt

This one will have the kids excited. Hide small little objects or treats throughout the garden so they can run around and get rid of their pent up energy before they crawl into the tent.

6. Watch a movie

If you’re feeling like a relaxed evening under the stars, put up a white sheet and screen a movie. Spread a blanket or mattresses, lots of pillows and snacks and you’re good to go.
