Posted on 13 October 2024 By Nomvelo Masango

Knysna is a quaint and charming destination which has plenty of fun and adventure in-store for visitors and locals alike. Fondly known as ‘the jewel of the Garden Route’, it remains one of the most picturesque destinations in South Africa.

From its quirky shops to its bright blue waters and even its lush green trees and delicious oysters, there’s a lot which the perfect Knysna experience provides.

Here are a few things to do in and around the beautiful coastal town:

See the Knysna Heads

The popular Knysna Heads are a pair of sandstone cliffs which separate the Knysna Lagoon from the rest of the Indian Ocean. In the past, they were a popular resting place for sea men. Today, they are a must-see landmark along the Garden Route.

When at the Heads, you will be spoiled to breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean and the surrounding majestic mountains. The Knysna Heads are divided into Eastern and Western parts. The Eastern Head is accessible by car and offers access to beaches, beautiful viewpoints and quant cafés. The Western Head, however, is only accessible by boat from the Knysna Waterfront.

Cruise into the sunset

Knysna’s calm waters are ideal for boating and for a number of water sports including kayaking, kite surfing and canoeing.

On a relaxed boat cruise, you can admire the gorgeous Knysna sunset while enjoying a glass of champagne. The Knysna lagoon is rich in animal life. The area is also great for bird spotting so you’re sure to catch the sight or some sandpipers and kingfishers.

Whale watching

Since Knysna is surrounded by the stunning Indian Ocean, one of the area’s most popular activities is whale watching. The destination has a number of viewpoints available from which you can catch the glorious sight of whales.

If you fancy a closer encounter, there are different whale watching cruises available through travel companies, and bookings can be made in person or online. If you were thinking about when to go, there is no better time than now. The period between July and December is migration season for the Southern Right and Humpback species of whales.

A good hike is great for mind, body and soul. The  Garden of Eden is a hiking trail located next to the N2 in Knysna. Its trails lead to a wooden walkway through the leafy forest and over beautiful streams.

Overall, the hiking trail is not too physically demanding and is thus suitable even for beginners. There is a wheelchair-friendly walkway and the Garden is also equipped with benches and tables. Additionally, information regarding indigenous flora and fauna is readily available, making the overall experience an informative one too.
