Things to note when visiting a market

Posted on 3 August 2024 By Nomvelo Masango

A visit to the market is an excellent idea. The experience offers bliss to people of different ages, making it the perfect family outing.

After all, only a few things in life are better than being in a lovely atmosphere with live entertainment, arts, crafts and great food.

If you plan to have an enjoyable time at the market soon, here are a few things worth noting:

Be intentional about when to go

The time at which you choose to arrive at the market is crucial. It needs to correspond with the kind of experience you would like to get out of it. If you hate crowds, arriving early may serve to your advantage. Being an early bird also comes in handy if you would like to purchase things such as fresh vegetables and fruit.

Alternatively, if the market you’re going to has discounted deals just before closing time, it is good to plan your market visit for later in the day. In some instances, going later can also yield less crowds.

Bring cash

Bringing cash is your best bet. Although there is an increasing number of vendors who now have card machines, some still operate on cash only. Make sure you have enough cash on you to purchase great finds and to enjoy a lovely day at the market.

Talk to the vendors and be polite

Kindness goes a long way in any space you occupy, and markets are no exception. Being polite to the vendors makes the shopping experience better.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions about the items they’re selling and the preparation that goes into it. If you are a regular at that particular market, politeness can also grant you the opportunity to form relationships with certain vendors.

Don’t feel pressured to buy

It is easy to feel pressured to purchase an item after you have enquired about the price or had a conversation with the vendor. However, it is wise to first shop around in order to find the best item for the best price. It helps to ask questions, as well as to compare prices and products before making your purchase.

Don’t be afraid to try out new things

Whether it’s buying from a new vendor or trying out food you’ve never eaten, newness can enhance your market experience. After all, you never know what interesting items you might find.
